Wagering Strategies

WIN: The first runner to cross the finish line WINS. You collect if the runner you chose to WIN comes in first. The minimum wager is $2.

PLACE: The second runner to cross the finish line PLACES. You collect if the runner you chose to PLACE comes in first or second. Minimum wager is $2.

SHOW: The third runner to cross the finish line SHOWS. You collect if the runner you chose to SHOW comes in first, second or third. Minimum wager is $2.

ACROSS THE BOARD: In this type of wager, you are actually making three individual bets on a runner. A WIN bet, a PLACE bet and a SHOW bet. If your selection WINS, you collect on all three bets. If your selection runs second, you collect on PLACE and SHOW bets. If your selection runs third, you collect the SHOW bet only. The minimum wager is $2 but remember that your total cost will be three times your minimum amount. For exle, a $2 'Across the Board' bet would cost $6.

DAILY DOUBLE: This is a bet involving two consecutive races. You win by picking the winner of the first race and the winner of the second race.

QUINELLA: When you bet a Quinella, you are selecting the two runners that will cross the finish line first and second, in either order. Exle: If you select Quinella 5-8 and the race finishes with #5 winning and #8 running second or if #8 wins and #5 runs second, you win the Quinella. Minimum wager is $2.

QUINELLA BOX: You can also combine more than two runners and 'box them in' so that all combinations of those numbers are covered.

WHEELING THE QUINELLA: You can also 'wheel' a favorite runner, so that it is combined with all the other runners. Based on the $2 value, the total cost of a wheel is $14. For exle, if you wheel #3 with ALL the other runnners in the same race and #3 comes in first or second, you win because you have ALL other combinations covered.

EXACTA: When you bet an exacta, you are wagering the two runners you select will finish first and second in exact order. Exle: It you think #6 will finish first and #3 will finish second, you purchase a 6-3 exacta ticket. If #6 wins and #3 runs second, you win. Minimum wager is $2.

EXACTA BOX: As with the Quinella box, you are combining your selections and boxing them in so that all combinations of those numbers are covered.

WHEELING THE EXACTA: You key a runner to finish the race in either first or second place with all others in the race. Exle: If you bet a $2 exacta wheel 4-ALL, you win if the 4 crosses the finish line first, regardless of which runner finishes second.

TRIFECTA: A trifecta is played by picking the first three dogs/horses to finish in the exact order. Exle: If you ask for a $2 Trifecta 2-4-8, you would collect if the race finished with #2 to win, #4 to run second, and #8 to run third. Minimum wager is $2.

BOXING THE TRIFECTA: To improve your chances, boxes can be purchased for a cost of $1 per combination. Exle: A $1 Trifecta box on #2, #3, and #4 covers all six possible combinations of those numbers for a total cost of $6. (All $1 Trifecta boxes pay half of the posted $2 straight Trifecta price)

WHEELING THE TRIFECTA: Another method for improving your chances of winning the Trifecta is the Trifecta wheel. Although the key dog is usually played in the first or win position, you can also play the key dog in the second or third positions. Minimum wager is $1 however, the minimum cost of a Trifecta wheel is $2.

SUPERFECTA: The straight Superfecta is played by picking the first four greyhounds to finish in their exact order. For exle, If you ask for a $2 straight Superfecta 1-3-4-8, you would win if the race finished exactly 1-3-4-8 with the #1 to win, #3 to run second, #4 to finish third, and #8 to finish fourth. Minimum wager is $2.

BOXING THE SUPERFECTA: You can also box four numbers in the Superfecta for only $24. For exle, if you box the #5, #6, #7 and #8 runners, you will win if any combination of those four runners finishes in the top four positions.

WHEELING THE SUPERFECTA: You can also play the Superfecta with $1 key wheels. You may choose a key runner to finish first, and then play that key runner with three others to come in second, third, and fourth. For exle, if you bet a $1 Superfecta wheel with the #1 keyed over the #3, #4, and #8, you would win if the #1 finishes first, and the #3, #4, and #8 runners finish second, third and fourth, in any order.

TWIN TRIFECTA: The Twin-Tri is a wager consisting of two races. The Twin-Tri can be played for as little as $2. To place a Twin-Tri wager, you must select the first three runners of the first half. If your selections are correct in the first half, you collect your payoff and exchange your ticket for a FREE second half selection. In the second half, you must correctly select the first three runners. If no one wins the Twin-Tri, a carryover jackpot is started and continues to grow until someone wins!

TRI- SUPER: The Tri-Super is a wager consisting of two races. The Tri-Super can be played for as little as $2. To place a Tri-Super wager, you must select the first three runners of the first half. If your selections are correct in the first half, you collect your payoff and exchange your ticket for a FREE second half selection. In the second half, you must correctly select the first four runners. If no one wins the Tri-Super, a carryover jackpot is started and continues to grow until someone wins!

PICK THREE OR PICK SIX: These wagers involve picking the winners of three consecutive races for the Pick Three, or six consecutive winners for the Pick Six. Minimum wager is $2.

Minneapolis Handicap

Thirty-eight horses were nominated to the final stakes race of the 2001 Live Meet, the Minneapolis Handicap for fillies and mares. The $40,000 race is a one and one-sixteenth mile on the turf. The highweight of the nominees is four-year-old Alybgood.

This front-running mare, trained by M. Lohmeier, has won allowance races at the distance, but has never run at Canterbury. Her last outing, at Arlington Park, was in the August 19 $60,000 Reluctant Ghost Stakes. In the one-mile race over a sloppy track, she led briefly before fading to third and last.

Two of the nominees for Older Female of the Year are also entered in the Handicap. Picnic Spread, coming out of new trainer Tandi Wheeler's barn, and Canterbury Hall of Famer Doug Oliver's Playful Edition could face off to decide that category decisively.

Picnic Spread and jockey Tho Nguyen are coming off a three-win streak, including the $25,000 Minnesota HBPA Turf Handicap. The front running mare, 5, obviously likes the lawn here as she has won all of her starts over it; she is carrying 118 pounds, while giving four pounds to Playful Edition.

Playful Edition's biggest win of the year, in the $35,000 Princess Elaine Stakes, also came over the turf course at the 1 1/16 distance. The come-from-behind finisher hasn't been off the board since her win in the Princess Elaine. Her barnmate and common running rival, Shesa Shesa, is also nominated to the Handicap.
